Our Story

Smith Heritage is built around a core of family history and inherited passion.

We have restored, rebuilt and created anew since 1795, when Emanuel Roe – our forebear – moved from Houghton to Barton Stacey to rebuild the village after the ‘Great Fire’.

Smith Heritage proudly sustains this legacy, continuing a tradition handed down for almost 230 years.

Family heritage

Building is in our blood. For more than two centuries we’ve put pencils to paper and tools to stone, learning from our predecessors and in turn, passing our passion forward. Today, our clients benefit from a unique and deeply skilled approach to premium construction, nurtured through generation after generation to form the Smith Heritage.

Construction heritage

We’re proud to preserve and build on the rich past of this timeless trade. Our focus is on traditional techniques, collected and nurtured through our dedicated library of historic construction volumes, rare trades manuals, specialist almanacs and folios from centuries past. Supported by our in house academic historian, we can bring period techniques into the modern day – or take inspiration for exciting and characterful application to properties of any age.

Your heritage

Our focus is preserving, celebrating and cultivating your heritage. Of your property, your place, and your people. But for us, heritage is not only about building to protect the past – it’s about building something for your future. Whether it’s a family home, scheduled monument or cultural landmark, we will help you establish and secure your heritage for the enjoyment and benefit of generations to come.

Future heritage

Cultivating heritage is about building for longevity, for resilience, and for a stable future.

In a world designed around consumption and novelty, our focus on restoration, reclamation and respect gives us a unique, sustainable approach to construction. With a preference for local material, original techniques and rejuvenating over replacing, we naturally build with a respect for the local environment – and with a better world in mind.
